What does it take to change a young person’s future? Sometimes, it’s as simple as a sanitary pad, a conversation, or the opportunity to see what is possible.
As South Africa celebrates Youth Month, the 1 Africa Foundation continues to show that empowering young people begins by addressing their immediate needs and inspiring them to dream beyond their circumstances. The Foundation invests in the leaders, professionals, and changemakers of tomorrow through innovative, community-driven initiatives.
At the heart of its work is a commitment to creating opportunities that provide young people with confidence, dignity, and hope.
In a country where the youth represent the promise and future of the nation, it has never been more important to create growth opportunities. Many young South Africans are still struggling with poverty and limited access to career guidance, but
organisations like the 1 Africa Foundation are stepping up to fill the void. The Foundation is responding to immediate needs through practical interventions and by engaging meaningfully in ways that help young people build the confidence,
resilience, and ambition to shape their own futures.
Restoring Dignity Through Pad Princess
Period poverty continues to be an obstacle to education for thousands of young girls. The 1 Africa Foundation’s Pad Princess Programme is changing that reality, ensuring that young schoolgirls have access to essential sanitary products, helping them stay in school with dignity and confidence. Pad Princess is more than just a sanitary product distribution initiative; it is a movement dedicated to promoting health awareness, self-worth, and the empowerment of young girls. This year, the programme set an ambitious goal of reaching more than 3,000 schoolgirls across Gauteng townships through the provision of sanitary products and critical menstrual hygiene education. To date, a total of 1,437 girls haves already benefited from the programme, marking significant progress towards achieving this target and demonstrating the tangible impact of the initiative in vulnerable communities. The initiative, supported by businesses and community partners, aims to ensure that no girl’s education is interrupted by her menstrual cycle.
Inspiring Future Careers Through My Future Self
Young people cannot become what they cannot see. Through the My Future Self Programme, 1Africa Foundation provides high school students with the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in various professions.
The programme enables learners to visit workplaces, experience different careers, and interact with professionals from a range of industries. By observing their parents and other professionals in the workplace, learners develop a deeper appreciation for education, hard work, and opportunity.
The high school students involved in the My Future Self Program gain confidence, improve their communication skills, and it enables career readiness, inspiring young people to envision a future filled with possibilities. It also strengthens family
connections and exposes learners to diverse career paths they may never have considered before.
Building Tomorrow, Today
Youth empowerment is not just about preparing young people for the future; it’s about creating opportunities for them today.
Through programmes like Pad Princess and My Future Self, the 1 Africa Foundation is addressing real challenges while equipping young people with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to succeed.
This Youth Month, the Foundation’s work serves as a powerful reminder that when communities invest in young people, they are investing in a stronger, brighter, and more inclusive future for South Africa.
Because every young person empowered today becomes the leader who will shape tomorrow.
