29 July 2026, Johannesburg – In honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service and compassion, the 1 Africa Foundation commemorated Mandela Day by spending its 67 minutes making a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners at Iphutheng Primary School in Alexandra on 24 July 2026.
As part of the initiative, the Foundation donated school shoes, generously sponsored by ZAHub, to learners in need. The donation aimed to ensure that children are equipped with the essentials they need to attend school with confidence, dignity and a renewed sense of belonging.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from one of the school’s teachers, followed by an address from Palesa Mguli, Communications and Marketing Specialist at the 1 Africa Foundation, who spoke about the importance of giving back and the Foundation’s commitment to uplifting communities through education and meaningful partnerships.
Learners from Grade 7 set the tone for the celebration with an inspiring opening performance, singing songs and reciting the history and significance of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy. Their performance highlighted the values of unity, resilience and selfless service that Mandela championed.
To encourage participation and learning, the Foundation hosted an interactive quiz where learners answered five questions about South Africa. Those who participated received reading books as prizes, promoting a culture of reading and lifelong learning among the learners.
The highlight of the day was the handover of the school shoes to the selected learners, bringing smiles and excitement as each child received a gift that will contribute to their educational journey.
The programme concluded with another heartfelt performance from a Grade 7 learner, who recited a moving poem dedicated to Nelson Mandela, reminding everyone present of the enduring impact one person can have in changing the lives of others.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Principal Mr Kgamaka expressed his appreciation to the 1 Africa Foundation and ZAHub for investing in the learners’ future.
“Today you have done more than donate school shoes; you have restored confidence, inspired hope and reminded our learners that they are seen, valued and supported. Acts of kindness like these leave a lasting impact and encourage our children to dream bigger. We sincerely thank the 1 Africa Foundation and ZAHub for choosing our school and for demonstrating the true spirit of Ubuntu and Mandela Day.”
The initiative reflects the 1 Africa Foundation’s guiding principle of “Love thy neighbour as thyself.” Through education, community partnerships and acts of service, the Foundation remains committed to creating opportunities, fighting poverty and empowering future generations across Africa.
Mandela Day serves as a reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to transform lives. By working together, organisations, communities and individuals can continue to build a more caring, inclusive and hopeful Africa.
